Stink bug problem in Maryland

0

I read your article about these pesty bugs. I am finding them around the house. I live in MD. I have killed about 20 in the past few months. Do I have a problem and if so what should the first step be? I have a lot of plants in the house and I bet that’s where they are living. Thanks K.

Our Right now it's February and there is still a good month of winter left where you live. If you only reported 1-2 being seen since November, I would say there is nothing to be concerned about for now. But 20 or more? I would say you definitely have something going on. They could be in the wall, the attic or up under the siding of the house. I recommend getting some Baygon and treating the rooms where you are seeing them as described in our stink bug control article. I also think it would be worth the time to try and see if you witness any activity around the outside perimeter of the house this upcoming spring. Chances are high they will leave your home if they're living inside once the weather starts to warm. Seeing them leave would confirm an infestation and enable you to prepare better to stop them next fall. Could they be living in or on the plants you mention? Yes. But it's not likely to be the main source. Do a good inspection there to see and if you find 5 or more, let us know. At that time we'll recommend a treatment based on what type of plant you have and other factors. For now, do a good inspection and treatment with the Baygon. This will insure any that have been out foraging for food won't be able to establish nest sites in or on the home. If this happens, it will be more difficult to control them so it's always best to stop them early.
